What is a dental crown?
The purpose of a crown is to restore the form, function, and aesthetics of the tooth.
Prior to this, the tooth must be prepared by precise filing. In cases of significant damage, endodontic treatment may be necessary before filing for the crown. Once the tooth is prepared, an impression of the tooth stump is taken and sent to a dental laboratory.
After the crown is fabricated by the dental technician, it is permanently placed by the dentist.
Crowns are used in the following situations:
- Reduction in the strength of the tooth due to significant damage.
- Change in the shape and color of the tooth.
- Wear of the tooth.
- Fracture (break) of the tooth.
- Change in the position of the tooth.
Crowns vary in cost depending on the material used. Тhey are:
- Metal-ceramic crown
- Full ceramic crown CAD/CAM
- Full ceramic crown with layered application
- Zirconia crown
The choice of material is made after analysing the aesthetic requirements, occlusion, the position of the tooth stump in the dental arch, the necessary strength of the material, and, last but not least, the patient’s financial situation.
